ABSTRACT:
Introduction: The residuals of intracanal medications could hinder the adhesion of filling materials to the root canal dentinal wall.
Purpose: The aim of the study was to investigate the influence of residual calcium hydroxide on the adhesion of two filling materials to the dentin of the root canal wall.
Material and methods: The root canals of sixty single-rooted teeth were prepared with ProTaper Next files (Dentsply Sirona Endodontics, Ballaigues, Switzerland). The teeth were randomly assigned into two experimental groups, filled with Ca(OH)2 (Cerkamed, Poland) (n=20): with a syringe and needle (n=10) or passive ultrasonic irrigation (n=10) and one control group (n=20) (no intracanal medication). The Ca(OH)2 in each experimental group was removed using a syringe and needle in half of the samples (n=10) and passive ultrasonic irrigation in the rest (n=10). The teeth were filled with standardized gutta-percha cones using the monocone technique, and two types of sealers: AH Plus (Dentsply Sirona Endodontics, Ballaigues, Switzerland), half of the samples, and bioceramic (AH Plus Bioceramic Sealer, Dentsply Sirona), the rest. The shear bond strength was evaluated using the push-out test and measured in MPa. IBM SPSS Statistics 26 software was used for the statistical analysis.
Results: The highest bond strength (8.4 MPa ± 4.6) was observed with AH Plus at 5 mm from the apex, while the lowest bond strength (3.3 MPa ± 3.7) was recorded with the bioceramic sealer at 1 mm from the apex. The bioceramic sealer had lower bond strength at all three distances from the apex.
Conclusion: Incomplete removal of intracanal medicaments creates negatively affects the adhesion of both sealers to the root canal system.
