RECIPIENT SITE COMPLICATIONS FOLLOWING AUTOGENOUS SUBEPITHELIAL CONNECTIVE TISSUE GRAFTS AND DE-EPITHELIALIZED FREE GINGIVAL GRAFTS FROM THE PALATE IN GINGIVAL AUGMENTATION PROCEDURES

ABSTRACT:
Aim. The aim of this study is to comprehensively evaluate the potential complications at the recipient site following the placement of either an autogenous subepithelial connective tissue graft (SCTG) or a de-epithelialized free gingival graft (DFGG), both harvested from the palate, in surgical procedures designed to augment the width and thickness of the attached mucosa around teeth in cases of gingival recession and alveolar ridge defects.
Materials and methods. To achieve this objective, articles in PubMed and Google Scholar, published in English from 1996 to present, were reviewed focusing on reported complications associated with the use of SCTG and DFGG for the correction of periodontal tissues around natural teeth and dental implants.
Results. The review identified both common and less frequently reported complications that may arise at the recipient site following the application of autogenous grafts for the augmentation of attached keratinized mucosa.
Conclusion. Autogenous grafting procedures using palatal donor tissue are well established as safe and predictable techniques for increasing the amount and volume of soft tissues. However, they may occasionally result in adverse outcomes that necessitate additional surgical intervention.
